In Situ Lithiated ALD Niobium Oxide for Improved Long Term Cycling of Layered Oxide Cathodes: A Thin-Film Model Study

Protective coatings applied to cathodes help overcome interface stability issues and extend the cycle life of Li-ion batteries. However, within 3D cathode composites it is difficult isolate effect coating because additives non-ideal interfaces. In this study we investigate niobium oxide (NbO x ) as in a thin-film model system, which provides simple access cathode-coating-electrolyte interface. The conformal NbO was by atomic layer deposition (ALD) onto LiCoO 2 cathodes. cathode/coating stacks were annealed lithiate ensure sufficient ionic conductivity. A range different thicknesses investigated improve electrochemical cycling with respect uncoated cathode. At thickness 30 nm, cells retained 80% initial capacity after 493 cycles at 10 C, more than doubling film. Elemental analysis using TOF-SIMS XPS revealed bulk surface contribution coating. These results show that situ lithiated ALD can significantly performance layered enhancing interfacial charge transfer inhibiting degradation cathode, resulting better rate life.
